Yeah, 300 miles is way too far. There's a default quiet time built into the nearby notifications that should be keeping the chatter down for you; and that filter also makes it so you often don't hear the most local notifications since you're in the quiet period.
How would you balance the needs to keep battery use and annoyance low, handle the time-cluster of local logs, keep notifications as close to local as possible, and make sure that some poor soul in Hawaii still gets notified of activity now and again? Our current algorithm tries to make sure that lonely people in remote areas still hear something, so every now and then you get a crazy far away notification.
Which would you like: urine color, estimated urine volume (lots, normal, low), or a urination timer? (wow this is weird to type...)
You can do this right now if you want: simply take a picture of your coffee cup, then type in a negative amount in the volume field. When you tap your coffee cup, that amount will be subtracted from your accumulated total for the day, and you'll need to drink extra water to achieve your goal.
Since we're not docs, we leave it up to you to choose how to treat coffee—just use common sense. There's also a recommendations paper linked to in the app for ideas from people that know more than us. :-)
Actually, both are possible in the current free version!
Simply tap on the "Recorded So Far" area, and it will switch to show the amount remaining (yeah, too hidden).
I'll comment on the other question for how to do that one.
